7 smart ideas to make the most of a small kitchen

Storage, layout and lighting solutions that make a small kitchen practical and look bigger.

A small kitchen does not have to be an impractical one. With these ideas you can get more out of every centimetre:

1. Use the height: take the wall units up to the ceiling and keep the top shelves for things you do not need every day.

2. Drawers instead of doors in base units: a deep drawer shows everything inside it and saves you bending down and searching at the back of a shelf.

3. Corner solutions: rotating or pull-out corner units turn a dead corner into real storage.

4. A slim pull-out unit: a 15 – 20 cm gap beside the hob is enough for a pull-out for spices and oils.

5. Light colours and reflective surfaces: light colours and glossy or glass doors reflect light and make the room feel larger.

6. Lighting under the wall units: an LED strip under the units lights the worktop, removes shadows and adds depth to the kitchen.

7. Built-in appliances in suitable sizes: an oven and microwave in one tall unit, or a 60 cm hob instead of 90 cm, saves valuable worktop space.

Finally: keep as little as possible on the worktop. A clear surface is what makes a small kitchen look tidy and spacious.
